A fast track training programme for individuals who are keen to start teaching English

St Brelade’s College offers international students of all ages an opportunity to learn English, take part in a range of cultural and sporting activities and stay in one of our local homestay providers or student residences. We are the only provider in the Channel Islands accredited by the British Council for the provision of English language courses and have been operating in Jersey for over 45 years.

Every year we recruit new TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teachers, mainly for our busy summer school when we have up to 150 young students at our junior study centre based at Highlands College.

We are now offering a fast track training programme for individuals who are keen for the chance to start teaching but do not have a recognised level 5 TEFL qualification (such as the CertTESOL or CELTA). Applicants must have or be studying toward a University degree and will be expected to complete a 120 hour online TEFL course before the start of the summer contract.

There is no cost for our training programme, but you will be expected to cover the cost of the online course (see below) and commit to teaching at our summer study centre for a minimum of four weeks during July once the training has been successfully completed.

Stage 1: Initial training

This takes place at St Brelades College from 1st – 12th April 2024 (Monday to Friday, mornings).

Week 1:

  • Overview of TEFL theory and methodologies
  • Overview of teaching requirements and responsibilities on our summer programme
  • Safeguarding

Week 2:

  • Observations of classes delivered by our experienced teaching staff
  • Peer teaching practice (delivering classes in front of other trainees)
  • Completion of a written homework assignment

Stage 2: 120 hour online TEFL course

This must be completed by 1st June 2024.

This stage can be completed ahead of stage 1. We can provide a list of recommended providers and our teacher training team are available to provide support to trainees as they complete this stage.

There are a range of online courses available from as little as £149 which can be taken at your own pace, at a time which suits you. On average, students require around 10 to 12 weeks to complete a 120-hour online TEFL course, however it can take more or less time, depending on other commitments.

Stage 3: Teaching practice

This takes place at St Brelade’s College during June – dates to be confirmed.

The final stage involves observed teaching practice at our school. Trainees will support one of our senior teachers in the classroom to deliver lessons to real students. The objective is to gain real experience in the classroom and build confidence. Trainees will be given feedback by a senior teacher, focusing on their strengths and areas to improve.

Teaching contract

This starts on 1st July 2024 for a minimum of 4 weeks at our junior study centre, Highlands College.

Full time trainee teachers are paid at the starting salary of £500.34 per week. This includes 15 hours teaching, attending a weekly CPD / preparation session and supervising 3 afternoon activities. Part time options are also available.
